OTHERS | Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing

the INTRODUCTION

Fractional or “pixilated” carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers are one of the latest advances in non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments. The CO2 laser has the longest wavelength of all the lasers on the market and can be used safely on darker skin types with appropriate adjustments in the settings.

the SIGNS

Fractional CO2 lasers excel at treating deeper wrinkles, more severe textural changes from sun damage, wrinkles, blotchiness, acne scars and surgical or traumatic scars. It can be used on the delicate eyelid skin and around the mouth. It is also a very effective treatment for sun damage and precancerous growths.

the SCIENCE

The fractional CO2 laser takes the CO2 laser beam and fractionates, or pixellates that beam into thousands of tiny little shafts of light. These tiny shafts of light penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. The skin then repairs those tiny shafts by pushing out the old sun damaged skin and replacing it with new skin. The “collateral” heat damage also helps to shrink existing collagen.

the PROCESS

The Carbon Dioxide (C02) Fractional Laser Resurfacing removes layers of skin tissue in a fractionated method (columns of skin are removed, leaving the skin surrounding each column intact to aid in healing) to help reduce “age-spots” (also called sun freckles, liver spots, and lentigines), fine lines, wrinkles, scarring, uneven coloration, skin laxity, textural irregularities, dull tone, and a thinned collagen layer of the face, neck, and chest.

the RESULTS

  • 1-7 days downtime:  Due to the intensity of the treatment, Fractional CO2 Laser patients often experience redness, and slight swelling following the procedure. Patients are encouraged to moisturize the skin, apply sunscreen, avoid sun exposure, and maintain a regular cleansing schedule during recovery.*
  • Smoother, tighter, firmer, and younger looking skin are the common results of Fractional CO2 Laser treatments. If a Fractional CO2 laser is used to treat acne, brown spots, melasma, or wrinkles, patients can expect the gradual removal of these conditions after a series of treatments.
